In this presentation, I will draw upon multiple experimental studies conducted at the Montpellier European Ecotron (CNRS, France, www.ecotron.cnrs.fr), a state-of-the-art facility designed for ecosystem research under controlled conditions. The focus will be on highlighting key emerging insights related to experimental methodologies in such environments. Specifically, I will address: (i) the dangers of overly simplifying model systems, (ii) the importance of precise and realistic environmental control, (iii) the benefits of continuous monitoring of response variables, and (iv) the advantages of utilizing more complex and realistic model systems to improve reproducibility and external validity.
